On June 13 and 14, EBC met the partners of the Horizon Europe project BIO4EEB – BIO insulation materials for Enhancing the Energy performance of Buildings, co-financed by the Horizon Europe programme for the next four years. This time, the project consortium gathered in Madrid, being the second get-together after the project kick off meeting in Cologne in March.
The BIO4EEB project aims to develop a range of bio-based insulation products that complement each other, providing adaptable solutions for various building types and situations. Through testing on 5 real case pilot sites and 3 virtual case pilot sites across Europe, the project will validate the marketability of these smart components, utilizing non-hazardous bio-based materials like Posidonia and bio-based foams. The goal is to support the construction sector in increasing the use of bio-based and sustainable materials in renovation projects, aligning with European legislation and industry standards. Additionally, BIO4EEB aims to address the insulation material shortage by promoting the use of available bio-based materials as alternative solutions to bridge the production gap caused by growing demand and disruption in the supply chain.
The project meeting was opened by the project coordinator, the German specialised company 3L Architects, before partners engaged in comprehensive discussions spanning over two days, focusing on the different lines of work of BIO4EEB. At this early stage of the project, the discussion focused mainly on topics such as the current technological, building and manufacturing context, the socio-economic assessment and users’ segmentation, or the mapping of the potential application of the envisaged solutions, in order to foster market understanding. First progresses in the development of bio-based materials were also showcased by technical project partners, and the current state of the demo sites and their implementation plan for the forthcoming months was presented. Finally, the meeting also addressed the exploitation and market analysis aspects of the project, as well as its dissemination and communication strategy, including the clustering and cooperation with other relevant projects and initiatives.
The project gathering was closely linked to the Sustainable Places conference, which in this occasion was also organised in Madrid. BIO4EEB participated to a workshop titled “Circular and Bio-Based Building Solutions” with other three EU-funded projects (BIOMAT, MEZeroE and CE4Con), to explore ways to enhance the energy efficiency of buildings for achieving climate neutrality and the adoption of circular and bio-based solutions, notably discussing innovative building envelopes and renovation materials that promote energy savings, resource conservation, and reduced carbon emissions during construction and operation.
EBC is currently actively engaged in the identification of the needs of the construction market, along with relevant technical requirements, ensuring that the products developed are aligned with the ever-evolving demands of the market and address the unique challenges faced by construction SMEs. Moreover, EBC will play a crucial role in disseminating the project’s key findings across the European Union, develop comprehensive training programs, equipping the sector with the necessary knowledge and skills to incorporate sustainable and circular products into their daily activities, and foster collaborations and synergies with other pertinent initiatives and projects, enhancing the collective impact and driving positive change in the construction sector.
